Situated in the beautiful mediaeval town of Montmorillon and with views across the valley to the ancient seminary and Notre Dame church, this gorgeous old house (circa 1850) has been totally renovated to a very high standard only quite recently. Are we sitting comfortably….. then, we’ll begin!
Into the main house, we have an old stone hallway with beautiful old oak staircase. To the left we have a small office with old parquet floor and marble fireplace (all fireplaces work, with the one here and in the main living room used regularly). Glazed doors, pass through to the main living room, we have a superb marble fireplace, large alcoves and huge window looking out over the garden, with the same parquet floor shining, too. French doors open out to the garden from the hall where we also find a new WC. The other side of the hall we find a huge dining room with big old wall cupboards, a big pantry has room for fridges and freezers and after this we have a big kitchen, recently refitted (though a bit orange!) with a full wall of old cupboards and another door out into the garden.
Below, we have a magnificent vaulted cellar where we find the enormous, new, gas boiler and the new pool maintenance equipment – access to the street here, too which is very handy! Up the beautiful oak stairs, to the first floor, we have a super sunny landing with stunning parquet floors throughout. A big master bedroom, has marble fireplace and en-suite plus a nursery bedroom through to the side. A full size bathroom comes next with huge old retro bath, sink and tiles and a separate WC. Another master bedroom has a lovely view over the garden, marble fireplace and a big modern bathroom with bath, shower and double sink, a fourth bedroom interconnects, but also has its own access from the hall.
Up the stairs, we continue, to find a landing with a stunning view of the old St. Martial church. Three more bedrooms, one with a simply superb view over to the Notre Dame church on the other side of the valley, each with a sink and with a separate, big, new, bathroom form an apartment style complex on one side of the hallway. The other side of the hall, we have an 8th bedroom with an en-suite as well as another huge bedroom used as a dorm! Attic space exists above all this, though if you wanted more bedrooms (?!?) you would have to deal with rather a lot of pipework which manages the extractor fans from the bathrooms below.
A second house is to be found out in the expansive grounds, this has been converted from the old stables, the original doors and windows have been retained here and lend the conversion a definite charm. Into the house we have a big room with 60’s tiled floor with a galley kitchen and a bathroom to the rear where a door to the garden is to be found. Stone stairs take us to three bedrooms, each have French windows onto what was an exterior terrace – now roofed over, and therefore a trifle dark.
Plenty of potential left here – but its already a very handy guest house! The garden is magnificent, fantastic wisteria, big pool with new pump gear, terraces and the whole, walled! Given that you are a very short walk to the middle of this beautiful, charming old town, this is a terrific opportunity!
